DIFFICULTIES OF PARKING IN RESIDENTIAL AREAS

I received a message yesterday regarding this subject to the effect that why is it I can’t park my car outside my house and the problem is caused by too many commercial vans being brought home.  This is probably a matter which is on the increase and has already been a contentious issue in the Borough.

There is a section on Dartford Borough Council’s website regarding Permit Parking Schemes . This lists several roads in Dartford and Greenhithe where the scheme is already in operation.

There is also a page which gives full details of the scheme entitled How Do Permit Schemes Work . Selected items from this show that:-

  • Permits may be obtained for vehicles having a gross weight not exceeding 3500kg.

  • A charge of £50 is payable upon application and annually thereafter

  • Residents are entitled to apply for one parking permit for the zone in which they live, unless they have off-street parking provision

  • Proof of residency and vehicle ownership is required

  • Visitor Permits can be purchased in books of five at £5 per book

At the present time there is a scheme under consideration for the Darenth Village area and at the end of last year, DBC considered a request for a permit parking scheme in Newtown . Paragraph 3.4 of this document includes the following:-

  • It is this Council’s approach to introduce regulations only when they are proposed/endorsed by the ward Members and a significant majority of a street states support for them.

Over 76% of residents in Lavinia Road voted in favour of the scheme and I understand that application of this scheme is now being processed.  From this document, there was either a poor response rate or a significant number of objections from residents in the neighbouring roads.

To sum up, there appears to be no obvious solution to this issue which would satisfy everybody.  If you have any concerns about any particular road, it would be best to approach one of your local councillors to discuss it with them.  If anyone can think of a better solution, I am sure DBC would like to hear from you.
